The misdiagnosis of a brain injury

On Behalf of | Jul 1, 2016 | Brain Injuries |

If you suffer a brain injury, you are well aware of the fact that immediate and ongoing treatment is of utmost importance. If you don’t get the treatment you require, it could put you in a worse position in the future.

Did you know that evidence of a minor brain injury does not always appear on standard exams, such as EEGs and CT scans?

When a medical team does not push further to ensure that a person did not suffer a brain injury, the end result could be a patient who is faced with more serious issues down the road.

Some of the symptoms associated with a brain injury that is not treated include:

— Functional difficulties when attempting to take on previous daily responsibilities.

— Anxiety and depression.

— Avoidance of activities that were once enjoyed.

— Mood swings and increased anger.

— Suicidal thoughts.

— Trouble with the law.

To go along with the above, there is something else to remember: when a brain injury is not treated appropriately the first time, the risk of re-injury in the future is much greater.

It is extremely important to receive medical attention if you believe you have suffered any type of brain injury. But remember this: not all treatment is created equal.

You must make sure your medical team has your best interests in mind, which means running all the tests necessary to properly diagnose your health condition.

If you are unsatisfied with the first diagnosis, don’t hesitate to seek the assistance of another medical team. This could lead you towards a better treatment schedule.
