Man suffers severe injuries during transfer to hospital

It might not be uncommon for medical professionals to initiate procedures to transfer a patient in North Carolina or elsewhere to another facility should the patient require additional care. While transporting a patient to another facility, care providers have a duty to take every possible measure to safeguard his or her well-being, but things might not always go as planned. A man in another state was recently awarded a substantial monetary judgment in a medical malpractice claim after actions taken during transport left him with severe injuries.

The incident

Reports indicate that the incident began when the man was undergoing a procedure to determine the cause of internal bleeding. While the procedure remained underway, he suddenly woke up and medical professionals say that this prompted a need to intubate him and transfer him to another facility for additional care. During the ambulance ride to the other facility, the lawsuit states that a paramedic chose to adjust his breathing tube, causing it to come out of place in the process.

The lawsuit asserted that paramedics were unable to place the tube back into position, subsequently causing the man to suffer from oxygen deprivation. The incident is said to have caused the man to suffer severe brain damage and leaving him in a vegetative state for up to three years. During recent legal proceedings, a jury reportedly found the ambulance company culpable of negligence and awarded the man a judgment of $50 million.

Where to turn for guidance

Medical malpractice remains a major concern for many and those who suffer severe or permanent harm due to the negligent behavior of another party may encounter various life challenges. Following a similar experience, a person in North Carolina could choose to consult with an attorney for advice on the next steps to take to seek restitution through the civil justice system. While there may be nothing one can do to change what took place, a successful legal claim could help provide a person with much needed relief during a difficult time.
