Types of surgical errors and the potential risks involved

One of the most common concerns you might have when preparing to undergo any type of surgical procedure may pertain to the possible risks involved. While there might be various risks associated with such operations, many of these may be avoidable if surgical team members in North Carolina provide you with an acceptable standard of care.

Unfortunately, this might not always be how things go, and your health could be at risk if you encounter any type of negligence during even a minor procedure. Surgical errors could occur under a variety of scenarios, and the outcome of such negligence could leave you with long-term or even life-altering injuries.

Prevalent types

The presence of negligence during any stage of your procedure could create a variety of potential health risks and some prevalent types of negligence that can arise during surgery may include:

  • Nicks and cuts:  Some surgical errors may occur when surgeons nick blood vessels or veins, or accidentally cut into nearby organs. The outcome of such errors could take a dire toll on your health.
  • Wrong site:  Your health could be at significant risk if surgeons perform an operation on the wrong side of your body or perform a type of procedure that is meant for another patient altogether.
  • Adverse reactions:  Surgical team members may also have a duty to watch for adverse reactions to medications or anesthesia during your procedure. If this fails to occur, the results could be disastrous.
  • Inadequate monitoring:  Inadequate patient monitoring after a surgery can also place your health at risk. Issues such as failure to identify and treat a post-surgical infection can create severe health concerns.

Use of excessive force and failure to identify and treat infections are two more types of negligence that could pose a substantial threat to your health and well-being.

Severe or permanent injuries

Regardless of how it occurs, any type of surgical error could leave you with severe or even permanent injuries, and sometimes the outcome of such negligence may even prove fatal. If you suffer harm or sudden loss under such scenarios, you may face an understandable desire for answers on what took place, or even for justice. When facing similar hardships, seeking insight in addressing your situation and evaluating your available legal avenues could prove integral to preparing to protect your interests and pursue the full amount of restitution you deserve.
